NAKHCHIVAN – GAMIGAYA TOURIST ROUTE 

Gamigaya is one of the earliest human settlements and is located in the watershed of the Zangazur chain. The height of it is 3725m. The name of Gamigaya is linked with the legend of Noah. There are pictograms of the 3-1 millenniums B.C. here. Archaeologists discovered the ancient dwelling houses of the Azerbaijani turks’ forefathers in the Garangush summer pasture where the pictographies were engraved on the rocks and proved that the Alp meadow rich Garangush summer pasture was the place of hunting of the ancient Nakhchivan people.

According to the widespread legend in Nakhchivan, Prophet Noah's Ark dropped anchor in the upper course of the river Gilyanchay, in Gamigaya. The legend says that the remains of the ship are still here, in a place called "Ayi Chukhuru" ("Bear pit"). According to another legend, the grave of Prophet Noah is in Nakhchivan. There are the remains of the village "Nuhdaban" related to ancient times, and the village and the mountain called Nahadzhir (formerly as considered "Nuhadzhir") in Nakhchivan. Consequently, we can conclude that the ancient legend is connected with Nakhchivan and its surroundings. Behruz Kengerli painted the tomb of Noah with oil paint.

In accordance with Decree of Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on May 5, 2006, «Gamigaya» historical-artistic nature reserve was established. Currently a museum operates here. 

NAKHCHIVAN – ALINJAGALA TOURIST ROUTE 

Fortress is on the top of the mountain of the same name, on the right bank of Alinjachay, Julfa region. In the oldest sources it is written as - "Erinjag", "Erinjik", "Alanjik", "Alinja", "Alanjug", and etc.

There are different opinions about the construction date of the castle. Some historians think that it is 2 thousand-year castle. Alinja is depicted as strong fortress in "Kitabi-Dada Gorgud" epos as well.

Alinja name is considered as the name of the tower, mountain, river in medieval sources. There is sufficient information about the castle in the works of many historians, namely Nasavi (XIII c.), Sharafaddin Ali Yazdi (XV c.), turkish traveler Evliya Chalabi (XVII c.), and others. Alinjagala is a symbol of grandeur and bellicosity of this land having unique nature. The castle, first of all, astonishes people with its extraordinary appearance. Castle walls starting from the feet of Alinja mountain rise upwards as steps. 

The remainders of the beautiful palaces and buildings belonging to the feudals in the Alinjagala were depicted in the literature of the XIX century. It was possible to keep a herd of horses and cattles before and other military ammunition in the fortress.  In the rein of the Azerbaijan Atabaylar –the Eldanizlar power, the importance of the Alinjagala rose and turned the place of shelter, for the security of the rulers’ families, which was considered the most strategic military fortification.

In accordance with the Decree of the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on February 11, 2014, "On the restoration of historical monument Alinjagala" here are conducted restoration works and created a historical and cultural museum-reserve "Alinjagala". 

NAKHCHIVAN – ASHABI-KAHF TOURIST ROUTE 

A sanctuary in the natural cave, between Hachadagh and Nahajir mountains, at 12 km distance from Nakhchivan city, on the height of 1665m.

Since ancient times Ashabi-Kahf is considered as a sacred place, a kind of altar of faith in the Great God.

This sacred place is considered as the most important sanctuary for pilgrims and importance. Sanctuary is known in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, as well as in other regions of Azerbaijan and countries of the Middle East.

Ashabi-Kahf means "Cave masters" in arabic. According to the 18 surah (aya) of the chapter "al-Kahf" in Korani-Kerim, it is about those persons who had stood against those who trusted in others, besides God, and as a result of which they had left them and hid themselves in that cave. They were 7 youth (Tamlikha, Barnush, Sarnush, Maksilma, Maslina, Sazanush, Kaftantush (shepherd), and their devoted dog Gitmir). It is about their sleeping over 309 years and the events they face with thereafter.

The event existing in Korani-Kerim can also be seen in legends about Ashabi-Kahf in. 

Researches show that Ashabi-Kahf noted in Koran is in Nakhchivan.

As in the previous millennia, today people consider this place as a sacred place of worship. Thanks to the attention and care of the Chairman of Sumpreme Assembly, renovation work was carried out here. 

NAKHCHIVAN – ORDUBAD TOURIST ROUTE  

Historical monuments: The Jame Mosque, the Dilbar-Mosque, the Afgan Tower, the Geysariya indoor trade complex with round domes (XVII century), an ice-house (XVIII century), mosques , two-storied madrasah, and etc.Ordubad is the second largest town in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. According to some sources, the town was founded in V-VI centuries. It is located 850m above sea level. For its ancient history, the large number of historical monuments, almost untouched exterior by new buildings, and preserved domestic life of its residents, the town has been named as the state historical-architectural reserve.

The town houses the Museum of Regional History with splendid collections, a folk theatre, the memorial museum of M.S.Ordubadi, a writer and the founder of the historical-romantic genre in Azerbaijani literature, the house-museum of  an academician Yusuf Mammadaliev and prominent educationist Mohammad Taghi Sidgi.

There are many houses for accepting tourists in Ordubad. 

NAKHCHIVAN – GARABAGHLAR TOURIST ROUTE 

 One of the grandiose architectural samples of the Middle Ages in the territory of Nakhchivan is Garabaghlar Tomb Complex. Garabaghlar Tomb Complex considered one of the pearls of the Eastern architecture is situated in Garabaghlar village of Kangarli region. The twin-minaret head-span, a tomb and a religious building from the complex reached our time. 

The construction of the complex of the XII-XIV centuries was ordered by Jahan Guti khatin. From the sources of the Middle Ages it is known that Guti khatin, one of the wives of Hulaku khan, the founder of Hulakus (Elkhanids) state, owing to her mind and skill took part in the ruling of the state. 

In the original sources, the construction of the minarets was registered in the XII century but the head-span joining minarets in the XIV century. 

The basis of the complex is a tomb, one of the pearls of Nakhchivan architectural school. The tomb belonging to tower shaped types of memorial construction of Azerbaijan consists of 12 halfcylindric projections. Garabaghlar tomb about 10 m diameter, reaching 16 m height at present-day condition, has 4 head-spans. On the top of four head-spans was written the last part of the 16^th verses of the “al-Mumin” surah of holy Koran. 

Inside of the rhombus arranged with glazed bricks over the body of tomb, inscriptions were written in Kufic. On the frieze of the tomb I-VI verses of "al-Mulk" surah from Koran were written. 

The architectural features of the tomb, the writing techniques of the inscriptions, similarities and other indications show that this monument was constructed by the architect of the Barda tomb Ahmad Ayyub oglu Nakhchivani in the 30s of the XIV century. 

Garabaghlar Tomb Complex was rebuilt by the Decree of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic dated July 4, 2016.

Geographical location, area, and population

Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (Nakhchivan AR) is an autonomous state within Azerbaijan Republic. It borders on Armenia, Turkey, and the Islamic Republic of Iran. NAR is located on the Silk Way. The total area of ​​the autonomous republic is 5.5 square kilometers, and the population is about 461 thousand people (01.01.2021). 

History

Nakhchivan, the ancient land of Azerbaijan, is one of the places of civilization in the world. The Azerbaijani people have created an old and rich culture in this land. At the same time, Nakhchivan is one of the ancient cultural centers in the world. The rich historical, scientific and cultural heritage of the Azerbaijan people has formed in this land. The systematized written sources, the archaeological materials discovered in the area of Nakhchivan, the famous Gamigaya petrography, and other monuments in the territory prove that the age of Nakhchivan is around 5 thousand years. 

Climate

The climate of Nakhchivan is sharp continental. As it is located in subtropical and temperate climate zones,  its climate is different. The absolute minimum temperature is -31⁰C while the absolute maximum temperature is +44⁰C. The annual precipitation is 200-300mm. 

Clothing

From the beginning of May till the end of September, people wear light summer clothes, and in winter - from the early December until the end of March, people mostly wear coats, raincoats and jackets. 

 Language

The official language is the Azerbaijan language. Besides it, a large number of population understand Turkish, Russian, and English languages.

Tourists are allowed to take pictures and videos;however, before taking a picture of a stranger in the street, you have to ask for permission at first as a symbol of deference. 

Working hours

As a rule, Saturday and Sunday are considered to be weekends (it applies especially to state institutions), but most of shops and supermarkets are daily opened. The workday starts at 8.00-9.00, trade objects close at 21.00 - 23.00, restaurants and bars work at night.

Currency

The national currency is manat (AZN). Banks and a large number of exchange points exchange any currency. As a rule, when paying for goods and services, the dollar and other currencies are not accepted; payment must be made only in the national currency - manat. The Banks serve clients from 9.00 in the morning till 17.30 (excluding lunch break).

Large stores, shops, hotels, and banks equipped with POS- terminals accept non-cash payments using credit cards.

Communication. Telephone connection. Mobile operator. Internet

Telephone communication is carried out without any technical problems. All the hotels have an international code of communication, as well as additional means of communication, such as fax, telex, computers, Internet, and so on. There are also installed payphones in the city. Tokens can be purchased in nearby kiosks. International country code is +994. Code of Nakhchivan is 036. For calling Azerbaijani number you need to dial +994 (city code) (the number of called party). There are 4 mobile network operators: Azercell (050), Bakcell (055), and Nar Mobile (070-077), Naxtel 4G (060).

Internet develops very rapidly. There are a large number of Internet cafes in the city. In these cafes, visitors are provided with all the conditions for the use of the Internet.

 Media

The media of Nakhchivan are represented by newspapers "Gates of the  East" and "Land of Noah", TV channels "NTV" and "Channel 35", and radio stations "Voice of Nakhchivan" and “Public radio”.

 Water

Water coming through the system of water supply is safe. However, in restaurants and public places, natural healing mineral springs of Nakhchivan, such as Sirab, Badamli, Boyrek, and Chyngylly are served in glass and plastic bottles. These water types can be purchased at any store of the city.

Transport

Public transport is mostly represented by numerous buses and private taxis. At any time, you can take public transport that can take you anywhere in the city. In most city taxis, taximeters are installed so that it is possible to know the payment with the help of them.

Medical Services

Emergency medical care, as a rule, is free. Medical clinics and service pharmacies are also operate in the city. Most pharmacies operate without a lunch break .

Security

Order in the city controlled by the local police. Many disputes can be solved without  breaking the law. Passport is recommended to have with you all the time, as it greatly simplifies the relationships with the police.

When to go

Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic can be visited in all seasons of the year. Because each season of Nakhchivan has its  unique colors and features. 

Spring – with its flourishing nature, torrential rivers, and fresh air, spring is very attractive in Nakhchivan. The celebration of Novruz (a holiday of spring on March 21) in spring makes it much more attractive. The symbol of arrival of spring – Novruz will make the guests have a good time with its several old holiday traditions and events. 

The summer – for many reasons summer is attractive here. The Batabat woods, Pazmari waterfalls, the Village Nurgut, Bichenek are especially beautiful in this season. Visitors receive unforgettable impression of vacation spots in the woods and the foothills which are located on the coast of  lakes Batabat, Vaykhir, Gilanchay, Paragachay from walks outdoors and picnics. There are healing termal and mineral water resources in  Nakhchivan AR. One of them is daridagh arsenic water located in Julfa. Having bath in this water in summer treats several diseases. Another character of summer is the abundance of fruits and vegetables. Fruit types as cherry, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, pear, and plum, watermelon, and melon have unique tastes.

Fall – is very beautiful in Nakhchivan. In the season of gree has harmony with yellow and golden colors, the nature of city especially looks beautiful. For fans of cool weather and rainy autumn days, Nakhchivan will create romantic mood in this season.

The winter – Nakhchivan seems especially fantastic in winter. Nakhchivan will be unforgettable place for winter funs. Especially you derive pleasure from warm national dishes and hot tea from a samovar in warm rooms at a fireplace of vacation spots and restaurants. We recommend ordering such dishes as khash (early in the morning), dyushbere, khashil and other farinaceous dishes eating in winter.

Getting there

Transport is one of the most important issues when you plan to go somewhere. So... And how to reach Nakhchivan?!

You can come to Nakhchivan by planes and buses. Nakhchivan International Airport is one of the biggest and modern airports of the country. There are Baki-Nakhchivan, Nakhchivan-Ganja-Istanbul, Nakhchivan-Moscow flights.

3 customs checkpoints operate in the autonomous republic. Two of them (Julfa and Shahtakhti) are located on the border with Iran Islamic Republic  and the third one (Sederek) is located on the border with the Republic of Turkey.

Public transport is provided by buses and taxis. You can use these vehicles services at any time of the day.

Domestic transport

Internal roads in Nakhchivan city are covered with asphalt. There is no difficulty for the movement of automobiles. Roads are equipped with road signs and light. Passeges are built in 2 parts of the city where there is a crowd.

 Buses and taxis serve as  local transports in Nakhchivan city. The new buses were brought to the city line, width and soft seats are designed for movement of passengers comfortably.

1,2,3,4,5,6 (access to the city) numbered buses provide people's arrival to all places of the city.  0.30 AZN fare for one person is determined.

Taxis can be found all over the city of Nakhchivan of service. Depending on the distance of the road in the city, the price of the taxi service is set between 1 – 5 AZN .

The analogue of the waters of Nakhchivan with radon and sulfur are hardly found in foreign countries. The same opinions can be said about the ironic waters which heal the internal organs. Ironic waters are the medicine of liver. Carbonic waters can be used in the treatment of gastro-intestinal diseases and removement of inflammatory factors. The religious tourism 

First of all tourists who travel to any country in the history of this country, living style, reflecting the artefacts are interested in religious affiliation. Hence, tourism and cultural heritage of any country, serves as a tool for the promotion of religious monuments. Therefore, the historical, cultural and religious monuments in the world, but also influencing the development of tourism, the country is attractive to tourists is considered one of the main factors. Autonomous Republic is rich in religious shrines. There are about 140 of the sanctuary. So here facilities various religious shrines, imamzades travels these facilities are there, and people of faith. The most important of these is the holy Koran, "Al-Kahf" "Ashabi-Kahf sanctuary" mentioned in Surah. "Ashabi-Kahf" religious-cultural monument complex has all the conditions for visitors to visit.  In addition, the tomb of Prophet Noah's grave is one of the tourist destinations most visited shrines and hearths districts that are available, including both local citizens and foreign tourists can visit whenever they want to go. As an example, in the village of Nakhchivan region Tenenem sacred place-Suleyman pilgrimage, Kengerli Garabaghlar village of Asni pilgrimage, in the village of Julfa region Almammad Jamaldin pilgrimage and others.

Ecotourism 

Ecotourism or ecological tourism – as a form of nature tourism, is the type of tourism which is about the care of nature.  Ecotourism is a trip which is made with purpose of becoming more familiar with environment and local wildlife, studying and understanding all these more deeply. Ecotourism is the interaction of tourism activity and local people. AR with its springs and lakes has a great potential for development of ecotourism. As a result of the attention to ecology, in every spring and summer, all greeneries, forests, and river banks of AR are swarmed with lovers of ecological tourism. One of the most spectacular places of this land is Batabat plato. This place, which is located in Shahbuz, 65km distance from Nakhchivan city, 2445m above sea level, is considered as the place for ecotourism. In hot summer days, there is a large influx of people to this place. The richness of Batabat with herbs and the freshness of its weather create a great perspective for establisment of health resort complex. Batabat is famous for its flowery meadows, natural lakes, simple and clean mountain air, forests, springs known as  Zorbulag, Sudlubulag. The lake of Batabat is remarkable as it is the only lake in the world which has a floating lake in it.

Ethnic tourism 

Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic borders on Turkey and Iran Islamic Republic. The Azerbaijanis living in these countries come to Nakhchivan to see their relatives and friends, and this is the most important factor affecting ethnic tourism.

The history of Azerbaijani people is rich in certain historical events and holidays. These days are never spent without guests. Many people delay their work, visit their families, and hurry to havethe nostalgic feelings even if they are thousand miles away. It is possible to get good income in tourism sector by preparing for such kind of visits professionally and serving the ethnic tourists and the representatives of other nations exemplarily. We must not forget that people, who visit their relatives in Novruz, Ramadan, and Gurban holidays, on the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis and New Year, are not only the guests of them, but also the guest all Nakhchivan people.
